What Goes Wrong in the World?

Gilbert Keith Chesterton once had read an article from a particular magazine entitled, “What Goes Wrong in the World?“. In which he responded in the form of letter to its editor saying, ”I have read your article entitled, “What Goes Wrong in the World?, I Am!” Yours Truly, G. K. Chesterton.

One does not have to be keen observant in order to see the deteriorating condition of morality of our society. We live in an age where people values cash instead of conviction; materials instead of relationships; vices instead of virtues. This essay doesn’t necesserily aim to criticize our modern world but to serves as an awareness of the real problem. For the past decades we are living witnesses of different turmoils and crisis in the areas of family, , political, educational, and environmental.

The family sufferes fragments due to marital unfaithfulness, the approval annulment or divorce when both partners feel their marriage is no longer working. The result is children suffer. It seems that we forget that a nation is as strong as the families that composed it. How can we have a strong nation if our families are weak?

In the realm of politics, there has been tremendous crisis. Some political figures trade their integrity for money and replace commitment with selfish gains. The consequences of this are numerous that we can go over to this for quiet sometimes. Among the many consequences are betrayal of confidence of the people, irresponsible use of power and national and local resouces, and economic decline.

Our environment is never an exemption to the crisis modern world faces. we experience global warming due to pollution, improper waste disposal, and irresponsible management of natural resources. I wonder what world the next generation might witness if today’s generation persists in doing those things.

What’ really wrong in this world? It’s man’s sinfulness!

As long as man keeps on doing things without regards to what is really good and evil destruction of everything is inevitable! A Stoic philosopher and Roman Emperor, Marcus Aurelius, once said, “All is ephemeral.” It means that regardless how beautiful and mighty a nation, empire, or culture it may be it will come to an end!

We are created to be stewards of God’s creation (Gen. 1:26-27). Whatever blessings such as family, government, education, environment, etc., that God has placed in our trust, let’s value it. Let’s do right things right as service to Jesus Christ and not to man. Thereby, fulfilling our duty– to honor God in all things.
